Both books are written in simple, yet effective poetic language, which the children have loved listening to during our story time. They provide clear opportunity for discussion and debate around the messages they carry and of the roles of the main characters.
The illustrations enhance the stories and open up the text to even the poorest readers.
As a teacher, I try to inspire the children in my care to look at the 'big picture' and to understand how they themselves can have a positive effect. These books help to illustrate just that point to the children.
The classroom and library based copies of these books are well used and popular with all ability levels. In fact the Year 6 classes have used them effectively and I have based whole- school assemblies on them.
Below are some of the comments from children I have shared the books with:
"I think the book is really good because there are wonderful words and it's good because she turns into a mermaid."
"I loved this book because it rhymed. I loved the illustrations. It was lovely to read."
"I loved it! My favourite part was when he healed the frog."
" I loved the rhyme and really enjoyed the activities at the back of the book too!"

This book is a treasure! The story is quite magical and full of serious earth honouring messages. The illustrator is an adolescent and his work is beautiful. I had a frog lover who forever was bringing frogs into the house introducing me to his friends. Fabulous gift for any age.
